SUMMARY:Restoration Laos: Freeing Land & People from the Explosive Remnants of the Vietnam War
DESCRIPTION:A forum at Grace Episcopal Church\nSunday  September 15th \nFor a decade during the Vietnam War\, the United States rained bombs on the tiny\, neutral country of Laos\, making Laos the most heavily bombed country on earth. The war is not yet over in Laos: about three in ten of these bombs didn’t explode as intended\, which means that there are 80 million of them still there and still lethal. Here from the Rev. Cn. Michael Ambler\, founder of Restoration Laos\, about how we can help. \nForums are free and held after the Sunday 9:30 a.m. services (about 10:45) at the church hidden on a hill at 1100 Washington Street. Parking is behind the church.

SUMMARY:'Philadelphia Eleven' to be shown at The Gem in Bethel
DESCRIPTION:The Gem and West Parish Congregational Church are screening the film\, The Philadelphia Eleven\, as part of the Faith & Film series\, and to welcome the Rev. Merrill Bittne to lead a short Q&A following the film. \nThe Philadelphia Eleven is a documentary that tells the story of the first ordained women in 1974 and explores the lives of those who succeeded in transforming an age-old institution despite the threats to their personal safety and the risk of rejection by the church they loved. These women became and remain an inspiration for generations of women in the ministry\, and a clarion call for the entire Christian Church. \nMerrill Bittner is a retired Episcopal priest who was one of the first eleven women priests ordained in The Episcopal Church fifty years ago and is featured in the film. After leaving active ministry\, Merrill and her partner\, now wife\, Noppa\, found their way to Maine and settled in the Western foothills. Merrill has since served as a career and guidance counselor for MSAD 44 Adult Education for several years\, followed by a hospice chaplaincy and eventually as an assisting priest at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Rumford for many years. She is now fully retired and loving life in the woods of Maine. \nWatch the panel discussion hosted by The Episcopal Diocese of Maine earlier this year and featuring Merrill here. \nPurchase tickets (pay-as-you-can) here.
