St. Lukes
Baileyville/Woodland
The first service of St. Luke's Mission was held at the home of Mrs. Alfred McLaughlin on January 2, 1916. The Holy Eucharist was celebrated by the Rev. J. Edward Hand, of St. Anne's Church, Calais, with 15 people present. Services were later held in Redman's Hall. By the end of 1916, through the efforts of the Lasies Guild and a donation of $1000 from the St. Croix Paper Company, a fund was started for the building of a church. Construction of the mission church commenced in July 1920 and was largely completed in November 1922. The first service was held on January 7, 1923.
On March 15, 1942, the bell tower, adjacent to the church, was put into service by the Rt. Rev. Oliver P. Loring, Bishop of Maine. The bell was initially cast for the Glen Falls Manufacturing Company of Berlin, New Hampshire, and was inscribed with the words "The Consumption of Paper is the Measure of a People's Culture." The history of Woodland is, to a certain extent, bound up with the history of the bell and the names inscribed on the bronze tablet affixed to the bell tower, a number of whom were involved with the setting up the St. Croix Paper Company.
