Planned Giving
The Minister of the Congregation is directed to instruct the people,
from time to time, about the duty of … all persons to make wills,
while they are in health, arranging for the disposal of their temporal goods,
not neglecting, if they are able, to leave bequests for religious and charitable uses.
(BCP, p. 445)
Most active Christians have given regularly of God's gifts during their lifetime to further the mission and ministry of the Episcopal Church in Maine. Many also desire to continue their stewardship after their death through planned giving.
A planned gift or bequest allows the donor to support the future of the work of the church and may also provide significant tax savings. In addition to cash, gifts may consist of securities, real estate, life insurance policies, unused retirement plans and tangible personal property such as silver, antiques, artwork and other collectibles. Because every gift is unique and each donor has different goals, assets and obligations, persons considering a planned gift are invited to talk with the Missioner for Stewardship. Such conversations are taken in confidence and create no obligation on the part of the prospective donor.
The First Light Society recognizes planned gifts as grateful responses to God's goodness. A person automatically becomes a member of the First Light Society when he or she makes a provision for the continued ministry of any congregation or ministry in the Diocese of Maine.
Congregations interested in starting a legacy society to honor those who have made provisions for future gifts are also invited to contact the Missioner for Stewardship for more information.
