Campus Ministry

A place to explore "where your deep gladness
And the world's deep hunger meet"

- Frederick Buechner

Campus ministry in the Diocese of Maine aspires to engage colleges and universities in Maine with the Church in all its forms. Our goal is to create a dialogue with the Gospel and to explore ways in which we are called to put our faith into action.

The Episcopal Chaplaincy at USM offers a ministry of presence and hospitality to the students, faculty and staff from all religious/spiritual paths. The chaplaincy is a student/campus-community centered ministry. It is organically grown through the mutual feeding and fertilization of each others' spiritual lives as illuminated by the Spirit.

Putting faith in action is the grounding of the Chaplaincy. In addition to offering opportunities for worship and celebration, community and support, much of the Chaplain's work is to offer programs and conversations where the campus community can engage in finding ways in which the teachings of our faith traditions inform our work in the world.

The Missioner for Campus Ministry/Episcopal Chaplain is the Rev. Shirley Bowen. She has worked on college campuses for 25 years and is well versed in finding ways to engage the campus community in a spiritual journey. She is also a half-time parish priest in Biddeford, Maine.
