CLERGY SEARCH PROCESS IN THE DIOCESE OF MAINE

The Search Committee receives names from the following sources:

  • Recommendations from members of the congregation
  • Suggestions from the Bishop's Office
  • Priests who have indicated their interest to the Diocesan Deployment Officer
  • The Church Deployment computer search

The Discernment Committee reviews the paperwork submitted by candidates. Required paperwork consists of current CDO Profile and resume which includes a list of gifts and skills of the priest with examples of successes in these areas of ministry.

The Discernment Committee meets on a regular basis to review the material received and contacts the candidates it wishes to pursue stating their interest and with information about the parish, the community, and their schedule for the discernment process. The same questions will be asked of all candidates under consideration.

When the Discernment Committee has received information from the candidates it wishes to pursue and completed the reference checks, the committee will submit a preliminary "Short List" to the Bishop for approval.

Reference checks on the candidates on the "Short List" are conducted by the Bishop and the Deployment Officer with their counterparts in the dioceses of the candidates.

Candidates are invited for interviews with the Discernment Committee, Bishop, and Deployment Officer.

Visits are made by members of the Discernment Committee to candidates' congregations.

The Discernment Committee makes a recommendation of their choice to the Vestry.

The Vestry elects the new Rector and Warden extends the call
The Discernment Committee is strongly urged to communicate with all candidates under consideration at least every thirty days to advise them about the status of the process and whether or not they are still under consideration.

If candidates have any questions concerning their status in a search process, they should contact either the Chair of the Discernment Committee or the Deployment Officer.
